12,000 potholes fixed but cold will bring more

Highways engineers say they have filled in more than 12,000 potholes in the past year but the recent cold snap will cause more.

Leicestershire County Council highways manager Andy Warrington said his teams had repaired 5,000 potholes on its 2,800-mile road network.

In the city, 7,500 potholes have been filled in.

Mr Warrington said: "Potholes have been a major problem but we have been fixing them as we find them, or as they are reported to us.

"There is, of course, some concern about the impact the current weather will have.

"In October and November, we were getting about 50 reports of potholes a week, that will probably go up to 300 in the coming months."

Mr Warrington said he hoped preventative work in the summer would reduce the number of new potholes.

"We did an awful lot of surface dressing to stop water getting under the road where it then freezes and can cause potholes.

"Our roads are more resilient than in many other areas because they are well maintained but that does not mean we will not have some problems."

The county council is uncertain if it will get extra Government help to repair this winter's damage.

County Hall's cabinet transport spokesman councillor Lesley Pendleton said: "We have put some money in the pot but we probably won't be able to do as much next year as we have this year."
