A 'nappy Christmas' for newborn babies at Leicester hospitals

These bouncing babies have given their families the best Christmas presents of all.

A total of 12 babies were born on Christmas morning at Leicester Royal Infirmary this year and several more at Leicester General.

Joanne Dolormente, 36, of Coalville, gave birth to her third child Kate-Anne at 4.36am.

The 7lb 9oz girl was not due until after the new year but Joanne had a feeling she would be early.

She said: "I came in at 10pm on Christmas Eve and just knew it was going to be a Christmas baby. I was thinking before that maybe she would be.

"She's the best Christmas present we could have hoped for."

Husband Dominic, 36, rushed home after the birth armed with photographs and videos of Kate-Anne to show off to the family.

Joanne said: "He was really excited. He went back to collect my eight and 11-year-old so they can spend Christmas Day with their new sister."

Sara Leighton, 20, of Oadby, had family and friends with her as she gave birth to 6lb baby girl Isabelle at 5.17am.

She said: "She's just the best present in the world and I really feel Christmassy with her here. She's my first so it's even more special. She's just amazing."

In the next bed was Alison and Tony Tomlin, of Aylestone.

Their baby, Rome, came into the world on Christmas Day at 3.30am weighing 7lb 4oz.

Alison said: "I was due on January 4 so I wasn't expecting to have him on Christmas Day. I've got two other kids as well so I need to get back to see them. He's gorgeous, what a lovely present."

Rehana Banu Sheikh, 37, of Highfields, had her first baby, weighing 6lb 1oz, at 5am. She had not yet decided on a name for the baby girl.

She said: "It was very quick. I only came in a couple of hours before with my husband Sikendar. It feels great to be a mum. We have taken so many pictures already."

Denise Brookes, delivery suite ward manager at the infirmary, said this Christmas morning was the busiest for a while.

Only 11 babies were born in the whole of Leicestershire on Christmas morning last year. She said: "We had 12 Christmas babies at this hospital by 11.30am. It's actually been a very busy December.

"It's great for a lot of families to have their baby on a special day, it's different isn't it? And it's always nice for us as well."
