Rams a win away as 49ers fall apart

ST. LOUIS — Mike Singletary and Troy Smith squabbled on the sideline. Rookie Sam Bradford stayed veteran calm. The No. 1 overall pick helped keep the Rams' playoff drive going and broke Peyton Manning's league rookie record for completions to beat the 49ers.

"I guess it's pretty cool," Bradford said of his record 335 completions (Manning had 326 in 1998). "I'm all fired up about the win."

St. Louis hosts Seattle next week with the winner claiming the title in the weak NFC West.

The Rams sacked Troy Smith and Alex Smith twice apiece. Singletary gave Troy Smith one more series after a heated exchange in the third quarter, then benched him as the 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention.

"Troy's a passionate guy, and the way he responded, that's fine," said Singletary, whose future status was in the air (see notebook). "He's frustrated, I'm frustrated. … We're both trying to get something to happen on the field. That's all it was."
