500k centre plans are in good health

PATIENTS in Cottingham will soon be benefiting from a 500,000 health centre on their doorstep.

Since the closure of Cottingham Clinic in King Street due to flooding in 2007, clinics have been temporarily provided at other surgeries in Cottingham, Anlaby and Hessle.

Now, a purpose-built clinic is planned on the former health centre site.

It is hoped demolition of the existing clinic and construction work on the new building will get under way next week.

The new health centre will welcome patients from the end of April and is funded by NHS East Riding of Yorkshire, the county's primary care trust (PCT).

The trust's chairman, Karen Knapton, said: "It's been a long time coming, but it will be really good to bring back services to Cottingham.

"It's part of emphasising our strategy to bring care closer to home, particularly as Cottingham has one of the highest elderly populations in the East Riding. I think patients will be very pleased."

The total cost of the scheme is 900,000, which includes 500,000 for the cost of the building and demolishing the existing clinic, creating a new car park with landscaping and improving access to the site.

Health officials at the PCT said future flood risk will be mitigated by raising the building and locating it on the car park behind the former health centre, which is on higher ground.

Residents were also given a chance to look at artist's impressions of the clinic at an open event at Cottingham Civic Hall last year.

East Riding Councillor Ros Jump, portfolio holder for community engagement, said: "I'm delighted it's going ahead.

"We can remember standing here in wellingtons, knee- deep, surveying the flooded clinic.

"When it opens it will be the removal of one of the last remaining scars from the floods.

"Our residents won't have to travel all over Haltemprice or travel to temporary locations.

"We will have everything under one roof."

Staff are looking forward to working in a new building in Cottingham after being moved to other locations.

District nurse Cathryn Williams, who has been temporarily based in Anlaby, said: "I think the patients are looking forward to having somewhere local.

"They have missed the clinic and so have we.

"The design looks nice.

"There's more space and it's about having the facilities back in Cottingham for the patients to access.

"It has been greatly missed by the community."
