Hull MP Alan Johnson quits as Shadow Chancellor

Alan Johnson has sensationally quit his shadow cabinet post "for personal issues."

The Shadow Chancellor has stood down from the post but is understood to be carrying on as Hull West and Hessle MP.

In a statement, Mr Johnson said: "I have found it difficult to cope with these personal issues in my private life whilst carrying out an important front bench role."

The MP has come under fire since taking on the position, last October.

Last month he was criticised after he appeared not to know the rate of National Insurance paid by employers.
