twelve iowa players sent to hospital

Twelve Iowa players were recovering after being hospitalized with symptoms likely related to offseason workouts, the school said Tuesday.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette said the players have Rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle fibers that releases myoglobin into the bloodstream. This can affect the kidneys and be caused by excessive exercise.

The school said the players, admitted Monday night, were participating in NCAA-allowed workouts. It said the players, whom it would not identify, were safe and in stable condition.

School spokesman Steve Roe said privacy laws prevented further comment.

Mountain West won't expand anymore

The Mountain West Conference won't expand further to include either Utah State or San Jose State. Its board of directors said the configuration established works best going forward. The decision disappointed Utah State, a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

The Mountain West will have eight members as of July, with BYU and Utah departing and Boise State joining TCU, New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego State, Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force. In July 2012, it will have 10 teams as TCU departs and Fresno and Nevada join in all sports and Hawaii joins in football.

Kansas: Former athletics director Lew Perkins agreed to pay a $4,000 fine to settle an ethics case over allegations he improperly accepted a gift of exercise equipment, but he did not acknowledge intentionally violating state law. Perkins left in September amid allegations he improperly accepted perks.
