Youth councils link up for campaign to get young people to report hate crime

A campaign encouraging young people to report hate crime was launched yesterday.

Youngsters have designed posters and leaflets as part of the Don't Wait, Report Hate drive which will run events in schools next week.

The work by members of Leicestershire Youth Council and North West Leicestershire Youth Council was showcased at last night's launch event at County Hall in Glenfield.

As part of the campaign, young people are also creating an online form aimed at helping under-18s report incidents.

Jess Murtagh, 17, a member of North West Leicestershire Youth Council, said: "It's great that young people have had a say in this and that our views have been listened to.

"A really good piece of work has come out of it that we will continue to promote through schools and youth groups."

Hate incidents are any kind of abuse where a person is targeted because they are seen as different.

Joe Orson, county council cabinet member for safer communities said: "Hate incidents and hate crimes cause a great deal of harm."

More than 1,000 hate incidents were recorded by the Leicestershire Hate Incident Monitoring Project between April 2009 and March 2010.
