Improvements wanted after latest lorry crash

A call has been made for improvements at a busy roundabout where a number of lorries have overturned.

Campaigners said there had been several accidents at the Bradgate Hill junction on the A50, near Field Head, where heavy goods vehicles have rolled onto their sides and shed their loads.

Yesterday, a truck overturned while negotiating the roundabout and the road was blocked while its cargo of timber was recovered.

The lorry driver was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with minor injuries.

Peter Batty, who represents Field Head on Groby parish council, said a catalogue of accidents had happened there involving lorries.

He fears that unless Leicestershire County Council realigns the road levels someone will eventually be killed.

He said: "It is surely the most dangerous junction in the county if you are driving a high-sided vehicle.

"In the past eight years there has not been six months go by without some poor lorry driver coming unstuck there." A load of instant coffee was once shed there and, in 2000, a military tank fell off its transporter.

Mr Batty said: "You could feed a lot of people with all the food lost there. It's funny to think about it but there is a very serious issue.

"This has been a continuing problem for years. We keep telling the county council the camber is wrong but they don't do a thing about it.

"They tell us they have had no fatal accidents there so there is no need for action.

"For any large lorry with a high centre of gravity that roundabout is an awful hazard because they are just liable to tip over."

He said he feared that because major engineering work was needed at a substantial cost, the council was reluctant to do anything.

He believes without the work the risk would continue and motorists would continue being delayed while roads were cleared of cargos.

A county council spokesman said there were no plans to adjust the junction at the moment.

He said: "In 2009, we changed carriageway markings to guide vehicles around the roundabout in a safer manner, following six recorded injury accidents in the preceding three years.

"Two of these involved HGVs overturning and the others involved vehicles changing lanes.

"Since the work was carried out, we have had no recorded injury accidents at the roundabout.

"We will continue to monitor the roundabout, to see if further action is justified."

Mr Batty added: "I think it's all about money. It needs major engineering work."
