Firefighters rescue woman from flat

Firefighters wearing breathing equipment rescued a woman from a smoke filled flat early yesterday.

Three fire crews from Melton and Oakham went to Westbourne House in Nottingham Road, Melton, following reports someone was trapped in one of the flats.

Firefighters had to break down the door to the flat at 1.30am after the young woman living there fell asleep while cooking.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics but did not need to go to hospital and is not thought to have suffered any ill effects from breathing in smoke.

The rest of the flats in the complex, which houses homeless families, were evacuated.

Crew manager John Miller said: "One of the residents was cooking food which set the fire alarm off, but she didn't wake up.

"She was rescued by two firefighters in breathing apparatus.

"I would like to remind people of the dangers of cooking and then falling asleep. This incident could have been more serious."

Christine Ashton, managing director of East Midlands Housing Association, which runs Westbourne House, said: "We take fire precautions seriously and work with residents on an ongoing basis to make them aware of the hazards of fire.

"Thanks to the smoke detectors no-one was injured and all residents were able to return to their homes after a short period of time."
