In Brief

BEVERLEY: A pirate trail is to take place to raise awareness of the work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

It is being organised by students at Hull College and will take place tomorrow on Beverley Westwood at 5.30pm.

The night will involve a trail around the town where those taking part will hunt local and well known artefacts and buildings.

The team that answers most questions correctly will win a ticket for four people on a P&O cruise, travelling from Hull to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

For more information, to buy a trail ticket and raffle tickets, call 01482 598979, 07922 893318 07534 893007 or visit www.questwood.labmgroup.co.uk

HULL: Staff and students from the University of Hull are to build a computer game in less than 24 hours.

Sixteen teams from the department of computer science will go head-to-head to compete for a Microsoft mobile phone.

The challenge has been launched as part of the Platform Expo 2011 being held at the KC Stadium.

Rob Miles, computer science lecturer, said: "Seeing these students in action gives me a lot of confidence for the future.

"The experience of working as a team under pressure is invaluable."

HULL: Families struggling with soaring living costs are getting free financial help from a local learndirect centre.

Research by learndirect suggests 40 per cent of people in the city think they will have at least 25 per week less to spend this year, with almost a fifth preparing to be at least 50 per week worse off.

IB2K at the Newland Science Park and staff at the Goodwin Centre have launched a new Worth Learning Guide.

It has been created by learndirect with independent financial expert Jasmine Birtles and national charity Citizens' Advice.

HULL: A Hull College music lecturer is hoping to raise more than 4,000 for Dove House Hospice through a number of charity events, culminating in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Graeme Wrightson has decided to do three main challenges over the next 18 months followed by the Kilimanjaro climb.

He will be starting with the 10 Peaks Challenge in July, which is a non-stop hike and run over the ten highest peaks in the Lake District.

He will follow it with a cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End over Easter 2012 and then a 3.8km open water swim in Ullswater in the Lake District, the official distance of an Ironman swim.

Finally, in August next year, he will climb the 5,895m Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the largest volcanoes in the world.

HULL: A voluntary redundancy programme at Hull City Council is being extended.

The authority is looking to shed up to 1,400 posts to make 50 million of savings over the next 12 months.

More than 100 staff were allowed to leave voluntarily before Christmas and decisions on a second round of applications will be announced on April 5.
