Schoolchildren hurt in bus crash

Seven children have been taken to hospital after a school bus crashed into a lamp post in Market Weighton.

The bus hit the post shortly before 3pm yesterday on the A1079 near the Arris Hill roundabout.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said 14 youngsters were checked over by medical staff at the scene and seven of those were taken by ambulance to York hospital.

A spokesperson said the children received treatment for minor cuts and bruises.

The driver escaped unharmed.

No other vehicle was involved.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "Humberside Police attended a minibus road traffic collision near the Arris Hill roundabout on the A1079, Market Weighton, at 2.56pm.

"The silver minibus carrying schoolchildren was in a collision with a lamp post.

"A number of people sustained minor cuts and bruises, with eight people sustaining non-serious injuries."

The A1079 in both directions near Cliffe Road was partially blocked, causing congestion and queuing traffic.
