University of Hull staff take part in nationwide strike over pensions

STAFF from the University of Hull are on strike in a row over changes to their pensions.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) were taking part in a day of action along with 62 other universities and colleges across the country.

Picket lines have been set up at various entrances to the campus and union members are stopping cars and pedestrians asking them to turn back or sign a petition in support.

Daniel Valiumy, a senior lecturer at the university and vice chair of the UCU Hull branch, said: "We are very upset about the cuts. Our pension scheme is private and there is no reason for the employer to cut it.

"We believe they want the extra money in anticipation of cuts from the Government. So really they are just asking us to take a pay cut."

Also on the picket lines this morning were members of the National Union of Teachers and Unison. A message of support was also sent from protestors at Saltend.
