400 pupils fail to get into choice of primary

More than 400 youngsters will miss out on their top three choices for primary school this year.

Letters to parents advising them of their child's place at city primary schools were sent out yesterday.

Figures released by Leicester City Council showed that of 4,018 applications just over 96 per cent had been granted one of their three choices.

That means 154 children will miss out.

Trevor Pringle, the council's divisional director for planning and commissioning, said: "It's good news that we've been able to meet many preferences.

"I would like to remind those parents who may have forgotten that there is still time for them to make an application."

Leicestershire County Council also granted 96 per cent of 6,864 children one of their top three choices.

It means 275 will miss out.

County education spokesman Ivan Ould said: "Although 275 out of nearly 7,000 places is not a huge number, it is still more than we would prefer.

"Officers have worked hard to ensure as many as possible get a place they're happy with.

"Parents do, of course, have a right to appeal."
