Cancer charity challenge

A GROUP of friends have set out on an epic fund- raising challenge to cycle the length of the country.

Four couples from the Driffield area got on their bikes for the gruelling 1,100-mile trek from Land's End to John O'Groats.

They hope to raise thousands of pounds for Breast Cancer Campaign and Prostate UK by completing the 14-day challenge next week.

The average age of the four men and four women is 50, and they set a target of pedalling 80 miles a day.

Breast Cancer Campaign was an obvious choice to support as one of the cyclists, Sue Morgan, of Pockthorpe, near Driffield, has suffered from the disease.

She said: "It's close to our hearts.

"We know quite a few other people who have had it as well, so we were keen to support the charity.

"We thought if we're doing it for a women's charity, we should do it for a men's too, which is why we're supporting Prostate UK.

"If what we are doing raises awareness of breast and prostate cancer, it can only be a good thing."

The team includes Sue's husband David, George and Karen Hamilton, of Driffield, Tom and Gill Mellor, of Wold Newton, and Robin and Collette Freeman, of Hutton Cranswick.

The event started out as a personal challenge for the keen cyclists, but the group then decided to support the cancer charities.

Mrs Morgan said: "We didn't want it to be a charity bike ride as such, but people always ask if you're doing it for a good cause.

"We decided if people were happy to give some money, we were happy to donate it to the two charities."

The men have previously undertaken long rides to places including Scotland and France, but this is the first time the women have joined them.
