Cash boost for victim aid scheme

A scheme giving emotional support to victims of anti-social behaviour is being extended for another 12 months.

More than 400 people have been helped by the service, which has been provided by Leicester Anti-Social Behaviour Unit (LASBU) and Victim Support for the past year.

The service was set to end due to lack of funding, but LASBU has been successful in gaining further cash to carry on for at least another year.

The aim of the scheme is to help those who take a stand against anti-social behaviour, making reports to the police and appearing in court to give evidence.

Because anti-social behaviour cases are not usually classed as criminal hearings, the witnesses are not normally supported by Victim Support.

Joanne Russell, manager of LASBU said: "Standing up to anti-social behaviour can take real courage.

"It can be difficult for people to give evidence in court against someone if they have to return home and live next to the perpetrator.

"It's important people know they will get help if they are a victim of anti-social behaviour. It makes them more likely to come forward."
