Dragon's Den could be model for success, says Leicester South Lib Dem candidate

The Liberal Democrat candidate for the Leicester South by-election says Dragon's Den-style business meetings could be key to the city's success.

Zuffar Haq said he would use his clout as MP to get local bank bosses to meet ambitious Leicester business people.

He wants the entrepreneurs to explain their business ideas to potential financiers to try to win funding, just as people do on the BBC television show.

Mr Haq said: "I'll make the most of the position of MP.

"I want to regularly get bank bosses round the table with me and local business people who want to expand their business, or young entrepreneurs who want to set up new firms.

"It's there where I can help make the case for extra lending to those who are ambitious and smart. Thriving businesses will lead to new jobs and a stronger economy."

Mr Haq said his local roots were important to him. He now lives in Oadby but was brought up in the constituency and attended local schools.

He said: "Local knowledge is key for an MP. I understand the challenges an area faces."

Mr Haq is chairman of the Leicester Mercury Patients' Panel and has been a health campaigner for many years.

He said: "Health is a major issue for me.

"What could be more important than working to make sure that people live longer, more productive lives?

"People shouldn't have to die early or suffer long-term health problems if they are preventable. My years as a health campaigner mean I can hit the ground running."

He said another of his major pledges to the people was to cut crime.

He said: "Crime is a huge issue, and people can compare crime rates at the start of my term of office and the end and decide for themselves whether I've made good on this pledge.

"I'm a firm believer that if we make sure police have as much information as possible about crime and disorder in an area then they're in a much better position to help bring that down.

"As MP, I would make sure that the police worked in a smarter way with the public so that frontline officers had as much information as possible about where the area's crime hotspots are, and where their priorities should lie."

The by-election is taking place after Labour's Sir Peter Soulsby stood down to run for the position of mayor of Leicester.

Both elections take place on Thursday, May 5.
