Mrs Kelly is simply the best!

STAFF and pupils at a town primary gave their head a "simply the best" tribute when she retired after 30 years at the school.

Angela Kelly joined St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary, Market Weighton, as a teacher before becoming head 13 years ago.

At a special assembly, a short film showing highlights of Mrs Kelly's three decades at the school was played to the tune of Tina Turner's famous song Simply The Best.

Pupils past and present, and 100 parents, packed the school hall to pay tribute to the head's "amazing career".

Mrs Kelly was overwhelmed by the glowing tributes and insisted she would miss the school far more than it would miss her.

She said: "I am leaving now, but you have the best staff who will keep this wonderful family together.

"I have loved every minute of teaching at St Mary's.

"I am so proud of everyone."

Parent governor Grainne Speck said many parents at the presentation were past pupils.

She said: "Many, many children owe so much to Mrs Kelly.

"There are parents here who were pupils at school themselves and they owe their foundations to the school. Mrs Kelly has been inspirational."

Acting head teacher Julie Sutherland thanked Mrs Kelly for her dedication to the school.

Mrs Kelly, whose three sons attended the Sancton Road primary, led the school through a series of transformations.

The school is now almost double its original size, with a large hall/gymnasium, two extra classrooms, a new reception area, a prayer garden, willow dome and adventure play area for younger pupils.

During the leaving assembly, pupils from each class performed their own songs, poems and prayers and presented Mrs Kelly with gifts from each group.

Mrs Kelly was also presented with a plate adorned with the St Mary's school logo which was signed by every pupil in the school.

Pupil Kieran Guilfoyle, 11, said he most remembered Mrs Kelly dressing up as Zakumi The Leopard, the 2010 World Cup mascot with green hair.

He said: "We all really like Mrs Kelly for being here for us whenever we needed her.

"We all still laugh when we remember how she dressed up as Zakumi during the World Cup.

"She has always been such great fun."

Mrs Kelly said she could not thank everyone enough for her retirement gifts.

She said: "I will, of course, miss you all, but I will still be a part of the parish and I hope to see you from time to time. Right now I am looking forward to less paperwork and a bit of a change of pace."
