Run raises smiles – and lots of cash

Now their aching muscles are beginning to ease, more London Marathon runners have come forward to reveal how they fared – and how much they raised for good causes.

Mark Spain, 49, from South Wigston, raised nearly 4,000 for Loros hospice, where his mother, Elizabeth Walton, died last year.

"The atmosphere was brilliant and it was a real buzz," said Mark, who was running in the event for the first time.

"I managed to finish in four hours, 48 minutes.

"This time last year I was overweight and smoking and drinking too much. Now I'm looking forward to running again next year."

Tony Harrison, of Kibworth Harcourt, ran in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, crossing the finish line in four hours and 15 minutes.

Tony, 52, was inspired to take on the challenge by a friend who has muscular dystrophy.

"It was the toughest challenge of my life and I feel extremely proud to have completed the race," said Tony.

He was one of 100 runners who between them raised 250,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Charlotte Thompson, of Hallaton, finished the run in three hours and 51 minutes.

She was raising cash for Leicester's Loros hospice.

"It was a hot day but a great run," she said.

"I'm doing a run from Leicester to Norfolk as well this year and from the two runs I hope to raise 5,000 for Loros.

"I ran with a friend, Sam Robinson, who is originally from Oadby, and she raised another 3,000 for Loros."

Simon Coopey, 32, ran for the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity and finished in four hours and 47 minutes.

Simon, of Stoneygate, Leicester, has already raised more than 1,000 for the charity and is still seeking donations from individuals and businesses.

Anna Stretton, of Leicester Forest East, raised more than 500 for Parkinson's UK.

Anna, whose uncle has Parkinson's Disease, completed the 26.2-mile challenge in five hours and five minutes.

She was among 177 people running for the charity, which hopes it will collect 280,000 in total.

Paula Hamill, 41, of Whitwick, finished the marathon in five hours and eight minutes and said she was still smiling days later.

She said: "It was the best thing I've ever done.

"I ran with my friend Judy Ramsell, who lives in Ashby, and we crossed the finishing line holding hands and it was great.

"The heat was destroying and Judy, who's done it before, said she'd never seen so many people walking and lying down.

"But I raised more than 1,300 for Heart Research UK and Judy raised about 1,600 for Mind."
