Large crowds for Hull Carnival as Lord Mayor piped through city centre

HUGE crowds turned out for this year's Hull Carnival.
The annual event saw hundreds of people gather around a city centre route for the Lord Mayor's Parade.
It saw outgoing Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor David Gemmell, transported around the route in a horse drawn carriage. He was led through city streets by the City Of Hull Pipe Band.
Mr Gemmell said: "It was brilliant. It was a really nice event, very well supported by members of the council and by the public.
"It was sunny and warm without being blazing hot, so it was nice for people walking in the parade. The public got involved and really took it to heart. There were loads of youngsters involved and it was brilliant to see them and all the people along the route."
The parade started at Queens Gardens and went along Silver Street, down Whitefriargate, Carr Lane and to the City Hall before making its way back.
As well as the parade, there was the carnival in Queens Gardens and activities in Queen
Victoria Square and at the City Hall.
It helped raise money for a number of charities in the city, which had volunteers out along the route collecting money.
It also raised money for the Lord Mayor's two charities – the local branch of Parkinson's UK and the Alzheimer's Research Trust.
Mr Gemmell said: "I chose a national one and a local one. Alzheimer's Trust is very strapped for cash and it is an important charity because we are an ageing society with people living longer and a lot more people getting it.
"The local branch of Parkinson's I have personal knowledge of because my father had Parkinson's and he got so much help and assistance from them and friendship."
Throughout the year, the Mayor has helped raise about 50,000 for his two charities.
