Merry Morris band seek new members

THEY are a far cry from the stereotypical beards and bells.

Now Rackaback, a new Morris dancing group set up on the Avenues, is looking for new members.

Rackaback started rehearsing this year at St Ninian's and St Andrew's Church in Chanterlands Avenue.

They are now seeking out new members to join their merry band.

But the group, whose ages vary from early 20s to retirement age, are not the usual breed of Morris dancers.

Founder member and squire Emma Sawdon, said: "The stereotype is old men, beards and bells.

"Although there are some of those out there who have been around since the beginning, there are a lot more young folks taking part in Morris dancing these days, which is brilliant.

"I have to admit that I am a convert, I was one of those people who thought 'bah, Morris dancing – a bunch of old men in beards waving a couple of hankies around'.

"I can certainly eat my top hat now for those words."

The team is still in its infant stages, currently sorting out costumes so they can take part in "dance outs".

Members live in the Avenues, Dukeries and Pearson Park areas with a few from Beverley Road, with occupations varying from teachers, to students and biomedical scientists.

They rehearse every Tuesday night from 7.30pm to 9pm.

The group chose the name Rackaback, as it was the title of a tune members Colin Merkel and Jill Fisher wrote.

Emma, 30, who lives in Blenheim Street, off Princes Avenue, explained: "Rackaback came from the mythological dictionary, it stuck as the tune name and sounded perfect when it was suggested as a team name.

"The Rackaback was a mythical creature which was supposed to have six eyes, eight legs and four arms.

"Upon further research though, we found it is almost a riddle, as when you work it out it is a man and a woman riding a horse."

Although the group has enough musicians, it needs more dancers to sign up.

Participants can be male or female but must be aged 18 or over.

Their aspirations are to take part in festivals in the summer months, so people willing to travel in order to perform would be advantageous.
