Two local baseball teams win titles

Two local youth baseball teams won championships recently and have moved on in tournament play.

For the third straight year, the Greater Largo Little League All Stars won the District 12 championship.

The team advances to the Section 7 tournament.

Members of the team are: Drew Guido, Austin Birge, David Siegel, Travis Carden, Tanner Field, Drew Rosenfield, Kyle Koker, Jacob Henniger, Brooks Hanooman, Tyler Short, Mike Adams Jr. and Marlin Periera. Coaches are Rick Short, Chuck Carden and Mike Adams Sr.

The Clearwater Dragons 10-under team won the Dizzy Dean state championship by beating Pinellas Park, Fossil Park and Tallahassee twice.

The team reached the Dizzy Dean World Series in South Haven, Miss.

Team members are: Ben Scartz, Mitchell Farris, Nikko Abbas, Christian Cairo, Cristian Troncoso, Ryan Scivally, Zack Reigel, Jamie Woodka, Ethan Myrtle and Dominik Lee. Coaches are Ed Reigel, J.P. Myrtle, Brian Farris, Vince Scartz, and Omar Abbas.

Golf

The County Golf Association held a better-ball tournament July 18 at Bardmoor Golf Club.

The regular division gross winners were Ernie Muschner and Ken Brantley, who shot 69.

The senior division gross winners were Mark Thomas and Tim deLeon, who shot 73.

The overall net winners were Don Perry and Stoney McLaughlin, who shot 63.

Earlier in the week, the CGA held a tournament at Innisbrook's Osprey course.

The regular division gross winner was Scott Lynch, who shot 70.

The regular division net winner was Joe Cilluffo, who shot 61.

The senior division gross winner was Bobby Kilgore, who shot 75.

The senior net winner was Darrell Folsom, who shot 68.

And the ladies net winner was Jeannine Wiles, who shot 74.

Tennis

The USTA Florida Adult League West Central Region Championship was held July 9-10 at Hillsborough Community College. Pinellas County teams won five of the seven divisions.

Belleair Country Club won the women's 3.0. East Lake Woodlands won the women's 3.5. The Tennis Foundation of St. Petersburg won the women's 4.0. Innisbrook won the women's 4.0. And Countryside Country Club won the men's 4.5.

They advance to sectional play in August in Daytona Beach.

Takuma Walter of St. Petersburg was one of two winners in the Arthur Ashe essay and art contest. Walter earned a trip to New York for Arthur Ashe Kid's Day, held the week prior to the U.S. Open.

Track and Field

Johntavia Shaw, 7, of Clearwater won a national title at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a shot put throw of 17 feet, 8 inches. It is a national record in the sub-bantam division.

Bowling

Liberty Lanes in Largo held the Harry Beierlein Youth Scholarship Tournament on July 17. There were 65 kids combined in the 12-under and 11-under tournaments. The 12-under winner was Jordan Thornton, who defeated Brandon Adams 310-269 in the final. The 11-under winner was Corey Braun, who defeated Phillip Reckner 251-235.

Racquetball

Four Palm Harbor players attended the USA Racquetball Junior Olympic national championships.

Graciana Wargo won a gold medal in girls 10-under doubles, a silver in 10-under singles and a silver in 10-under mixed doubles.

Evan Wargo won a silver in the boys 12-under doubles and had fourth-place finishes in the boys 12-under singles and mixed doubles.

Jordan Cooperrider won a gold medal in the girls 12-under singles and in 12-under doubles.

Sean Cooperrider was fourth in the boys 16-under singles and fifth in 16-under doubles.
