Tigers fans head to Twickers for Aviva Premiership final

Tigers fans are gearing up for their "annual pilgrimage" to Twickenham in search of a hat-trick of consecutive Premiership titles.

The club said more than 15,000 supporters were expected to make the trip to south west London tomorrow, hoping to see the team triumph over Saracens.

A convoy of 20 coaches decked in Tigers flags and scarves will be leaving Welford Road with 1,000 fans.

Paul Hayes, Leicester Tigers supporters' services spokesman, said: "There's a real excitement about the game itself but for a lot of the fans the day starts at 9am when they meet up at Welford Road.

"That's when the banter starts and that's when there is a real sense of anticipation.

"It's become our annual pilgrimage and it would be great if we could make it three out of three.

"On some of the coaches we'll be showing DVD of the matches we have won and certainly none of those we have lost – it won't be a place for balance.

"It's a great feeling to drive down the Chertsey Road (near Twickenham) before the match.

"I have been to quite a few finals and we are getting more and more fans all the time."

Woods Coaches will be taking a large contingent of fans.

Tigers fan Bill Tanser is the company's transport manager.

He said: "There is always a buzz on the way down to finals.

"It is quite an impressive site seeing all the coaches rolling along the motorway and seeing the other fans in their cars.

"It can be a long day but it is always a great day out.

"We are all hoping for a Tigers victory to make the journey back a happy one.

"I know from experience, when we lost to Sale, that it can quite subdued if we don't win."

Kieran Lawrence, 20, works as a barman at Welford Road most match days but is taking the day off to go to the final.

He said: "I am really looking forward to Saturday and have been for many weeks.

"I'm hoping for a good, entertaining match. If it is as half as good as the Heineken Cup final last Saturday or even last year's premiership final, I will be pleased."

Hinckley under-12s rugby team will take part in a Parade of Champions at Twickenham on final day, having won a competition hosted by the Tigers.

Pupils from Old Dalby Primary, near Melton, and St John the Baptist School, Leicester, will also get a run out on the pitch after winning Tigers tag rugby tournaments.

Old Dalby head teacher Steve Cliff said: "The kids are really excited – but perhaps not as much as the coach load of parents and staff going with them!

"It is wonderful thing to play in front of 24,000 at Welford Road so to run out in front of 80,000 at Twickenham will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
