Blackmailer is jailed for threats to family

A BLACKMAILER who targeted a Loughborough businessman has been sentenced to eight years.

Gary Lewis Penwarden (48) pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced on Monday.

In August 2009, Penwarden began making threats towards the victim.

On two occasions, shots were fired through the windows of the victim's business and home.

Speaking after the sentencing, the victim said: "This has been a traumatic time for me and my family and has affected our lives in many ways. We don't know why this has happened to us and hope today's sentence has put an end to it."

Detective Inspector Lee Hill said: "The investigation into these incidents began in the summer of 2009 and, as time progressed, the threats became more violent.

"Demands were made for cash, and if the victim didn't comply he was told his family would be harmed.

"The inquiry required the assistance of specialist negotiators, who are skilled in dealing with crimes of this nature, and our colleagues in Nottingham.

"I hope the sentence passed today goes someway in helping the victims move on with their lives and putting the events of 2009 behind them."
