What's hot: Spring weather on the flats. The baitfish have started showing up. Snook are popping their heads out from their winter homes. The sea trout over the past few days have been plentiful. There are a few small schools of redfish around. Spanish mackerel are all over, eating everything in sight.
Trout: This has really picked up the past few days. Gator trout have been in shallow water near the mouths of creeks and rivers. They are easily spooked in that shallow water so use a stealth approach.
Spanish mackerel: They are in large schools on hard bottom and around artificial reefs. I like to locate the mackerel then anchor up and chum them to the back of the boat. I use a frozen chum bag and live white bait. Use a small piece of wire or a 40-pound mono leader with a long shank hook.
Cobia: They are roaming the flats on the backs of stingrays, looking for an easy meal. The best way to see them is from a tower boat, but you can do it without a tower. Any live bait will work.
