Seton Hall stuns skidding Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jim Boeheim stared at the Carrier Dome court that bears his name. Another game was slipping away from Syracuse, and he had no answers.

Jeremy Hazell led a long-range Seton Hall barrage with 28 points and the Pirates stunned No. 9 Syracuse 90-68 on Tuesday night, the Orange's third straight loss.

"We have not played well the last three games," Boeheim said. "I think when you lose a couple of games, you lose a little confidence."

Hazell, who was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, set the tone early by making a 3 from the right wing on Seton Hall's first possession. The Pirates (9-12, 3-6 Big East), who had lost three straight, torched Syracuse's zone defense for seven 3s in the first half, four by Hazell, and built a 13-point halftime lead.

"Jeremy gave us a lot of confidence," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. "He hit a couple of deep ones early and really loosened everything up. That was a big part of everyone else getting some confidence."

Jordan Theodore, who missed all seven 3s he attempted in a five-point loss to Syracuse 17 days ago, was 3-of-3 from long range and had 19 points.

Kris Joseph led Syracuse (18-3, 5-3) with 17 points.

No. 1 Ohio St. 87, No. 12 Purdue 64: William Buford had 19 points for the host Buckeyes (21-0, 8-0 Big Ten), who shot 55 percent from the field. JaJuan Johnson scored 22 for the Boilermakers (17-4, 6-2).

No. 5 UConn 76, Marquette 68: Freshman Jeremy Lamb had a career-best 24 points for the visiting Huskies (17-2, 5-2 Big East), who held the Golden Eagles without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes.

No. 6 Kansas 82, Colorado 78: Freshman Josh Selby scored 17 for the Jayhawks (19-1, 4-1 Big 12), who bounced back from their first home loss since 2007. Meanwhile, coach Bill Self, athletic director Sheahon Zenger and the entire team will travel to Washington, D.C., today for the funeral of Lisa Robinson, 37, the mother of sophomore Thomas Robinson. She died of an apparent heart attack late Friday. In the three weeks previously, her father and mother had died, leaving only Thomas and his 9-year-old sister, Jayla. Services for Lisa Robinson will be Thursday.

No. 16 Minnesota: With senior point guard Al Nolen (broken right foot) out, the Gophers will turn to Blake Hoffarber as the starter, coach Tubby Smith said. Nolen will have surgery today.

Fla. Gulf Coast 111, Stetson 103, 3OT: Christophe Varidel scored a game-high 29 for the visiting Eagles (5-13, 2-7 Atlantic Sun), who snapped a six-game losing streak. Tyshawn Patterson and Joel Naburgs each scored 20 for the Hatters (6-15, 4-6).

USF women pick up first Big East victory

TAMPA — USF held off Seton Hall 68-64 to pick up its first Big East victory this season and snap a seven-game losing streak.

Andrea Smith scored a game-high 22 and Daleisha Carn added 12 points for the Bulls (10-11, 1-6). Sasha Bernard scored 10 and had a career-high seven rebounds.

No. 19 G'town 65, No. 8 W.Va. 60: Sugar Rodgers scored 30 to lead the host Hoyas (16-5, 4-3 Big East). Liz Repella had 20 points for the Mountaineers (19-2, 5-2).

No. 12 DePaul 67, Cincy 48: Sam Quigley had a career-high seven 3s and scored 23 for the visiting Blue Demons (20-2, 7-0 Big East).
