Tar Heel star returns to shine in Shrine

ORLANDO — Marvin Austin kept mostly a low profile in the practices leading up to the East-West Shrine Game.

After sitting out this season for his involvement in the agent scandal at North Carolina, he had a lot to prove Saturday in the annual showcase for seniors.

So recovering a fumble in the end zone to cap the East's 25-8 win over the West more than made his week worthwhile.

"People thought I was going to feel sorry for myself," said Austin, a projected first-round pick before the season. "A lot of people talk about my talent. They don't see the work I put in to try to be the best. (The NFL scouts) say they just want me to be confident and keep playing hard."

The East scored 19 and recovered three fumbles in the first half. Syracuse's Delone Carter ran for a touchdown and was named offensive MVP. Richmond tackle Martin Parker had two sacks and forced a fumble to take defensive MVP honors.

UCLA: Mike Johnson, the 49ers' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, was hired for the same position. He and coach Rick Neuheisel worked together with the Ravens in 2006-07.

USC: School officials spent about four hours with the infractions appeals committee in hopes of reducing sanctions, including a postseason ban and scholarship reductions, imposed for improper benefits given to Reggie Bush and basketball player O.J. Mayo. A decision is expected in 4-8 weeks.

Utah: Norm Chow was hired as offensive coordinator at his alma mater. Chow, who spent the past three seasons at UCLA in the same position, is best known for developing quarterbacks Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.
